The United States ranked 26th out of 38 countries with a senior well-being score of 3.78.

The wellness score was calculated by integrating data from multiple factors that affect the well-being of seniors.

A composite score was formed using equal weights for factors gathered from multiple sources.

Countries were evaluated on aspects including healthcare access and availability, the level of social support for those aged 50 and above, the quality of their lives, and their anticipated life expectancy when they are 60 years old.

The score for US states included factors such as the risk of social isolation, access to healthcare, availability of senior living facilities per 100,000 people, and poverty levels among seniors, with each factor given equal weight to rank locations based on the well-being of seniors.

Wisconsin topped the ranking, achieving a well-being score of 8.62, attributed to its low poverty rate, extensive facilities for seniors, and a relatively low risk of social isolation.

The state of Minnesota ranked second, achieving a score of 8.21, doing well in various categories, including a low poverty level and adequate availability of senior living facilities.

Easier access to healthcare services is essential for seniors, who are more prone to severe viral and bacterial infections, fractures, and falls.

A person’s golden years may also include time in a nursing home or other type of extended care facility.

Oregon had the most senior living facilities per capita, with approximately 29 facilities per 100,000 residents, followed by Wisconsin, which had roughly 22 facilities per 100,000 residents.

Social isolation risk measures the likelihood of seniors experiencing a lack of social connections, encompassing interactions with relatives, friends, and community members.

Lowest risk levels were found in New Hampshire, ranking 24, and Idaho, ranking 26, followed by Minnesota, ranking 35, and Wisconsin, ranking 37.

On the other end of the spectrum was Oklahoma, with the lowest level of well-being scored at 0.87.

The risk of social isolation was found to be 77, and the senior living facilities per capita were only 4.14. Furthermore, the poverty rate among seniors was a high 15.4 percent.

The average poverty rate stood at approximately 6.5 percent in the top 10 states.

Following Oklahoma, Mississippi ranked second in terms of low overall well-being, with a score of 0.97, a poverty rate of 14.9 percent, fewer than six retirement communities per capita, a high social isolation risk, and the second-worst access to healthcare in the United States.

Next was Alabama, with a wellness ranking of 1.5, a poverty level of nearly 14 percent, 4.3 senior living facilities per capita, an isolation risk score of 83, and the 38th-lowest healthcare access score.

The US state of Louisiana ranked fourth-worst, with a rate of 1.79, behind New Mexico at 1.84, while Arkansas shared the third-worst ranking with West Virginia, both states scoring 2.04.

The number of people is increasing, as the majority of the population is aging. At the same time, the number of births has never been lower in the US. In 2023, there were 55 births for every 1,000 women of childbearing age, according to CDC data, fewer than in any other recorded year.

Birth rates plummeted after the severe economic downturn in 2008 and have still not entirely recovered.

In addition to considering the financial implications of having a child, many women are opting to prioritize their careers and personal development before starting a family. As a result, births are increasingly occurring among older mothers, with the highest birth rates among women aged 30-34.

Retirement can also be financially demanding. More than half of Americans who work full-time, part-time, or who are temporarily out of work worry about being able to fund their retirement. Almost half of workers who have specific retirement goals, such as traveling, do not believe they will have the funds to make this possible in the future.

Many older adults in the United States are unable to retire at the typical retirement age of sixty-five.

Adults who have reached the ages between 62 and 70 and are retired are financially stable, according to a study conducted by labor economist Teresa Ghilarducci from The New School for Social Research.

Many older Americans end their working careers with a lower quality of life than they experienced while employed, or simply cannot afford to retire.
