Planning on visiting New York anytime soon? Consider heading to Brooklyn and the Greenpoint neighborhood. Following in the footsteps of Williamsburg, which was once a haven for hipsters and has now become completely gentrified, Greenpoint is showing signs of resistance, with a concentration of upscale boutiques, eateries, and unique bars.

9:00 a.m.: coffee at 5 Leaves (18 Bedford Avenue)

This is a highly revered institution in Greenpoint. It’s where I begin neighborhood tours, meet with friends, and spend my time replying to emails while savoring a hot beverage – a coffee, chai latte, or rich hot chocolate. My preferred spot: the sunny terrace with a lovely view overlooking McCarren Park.

10am: A stroll in McCarren Park.

This park is a local favorite among joggers, mothers, and nannies, with facilities that include a basketball court, a soccer field, a skate park, and tennis courts. It’s the ideal place for an early morning walk.

Greenpoint has been gaining popularity among Japanese shops and restaurants since 2019, earning the reputation as Little Tokyo. One of the stops worth visiting is Dashi Okume, which offers a variety of ingredients to make a traditional ‘dashi’ soup. Adjacent to Dashi Okume is Cibone, a boutique selling refined artisanal ceramics and delicate stationery.

Here is my insider tip for tracking down the ultimate 80s-vintage sofa, eclectic knick-knack, show-stopping paint, bronze chandelier or retro tableware…. And the best part? You can find them all without overspending.

12:30am: a bento meal at Acre Restaurant located at 64 Meserole Avenue

Serving a special selection of fermentation-related dishes. My personal favorite is the ‘Chicken Karaage’ Bento, Japanese-style deep-fried chicken in small balls, paired with a refreshing passion fruit iced matcha tea, enjoyed in the restaurant’s serene backyard patio.

This is Greenpoint’s main shopping street for local artisans. In 1930s brick buildings, you can find a Japanese stationery store (Yoseka Stationary at 63), a hat store (Heads of State Hat at 71), a tea shop (Bellocq Atelier at 104), an independent movie theatre (Stuart Cinema & Café at 79), and stores selling cookware and eco-friendly products (Common Good at 96).

3:00 pm: Greenpoint Terminal Market (72 Noble Street)

.

4:00 pm: a slice of pizza at Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop (110 Frankin Street)

This is another establishment in Greenpoint, a type of diner with a kitschy décor, where you can order a slice of sesame crust pizza. A real treat.

“5pm: Polish traditions on Manhattan Avenue”

(727 Manhattan Avenue) has been a popular destination for New Yorkers seeking the finest donuts since the early 1950s. Waitresses don almond green uniforms with pink collars for a nostalgic ambiance, while the menu showcases a variety of flavours. Be sure to try the Old Fashioned with toasted coconut shavings, a true favourite among locals!

6:00 PM: Drinks at Cecily’s (80 Franklin Street)

Stop by for a glass of wine, featuring a fine selection that includes top-notch vintages from France, as well as options from Portugal, Greece, and California, paired with a sharing plate of oysters and roasted carrots.

8:00 pm: dinner at Rules of Thirds (171 Bank Street)

To head to Greenpoint. The interior is simple yet elegant, the food is upscale and gourmet. Another alternative is Milk and Roses, offering an Italian-American eatery in a library lounge or outdoors when the weather is pleasant (at 35 Box Street).
